Black Yak are a high-end, Seoul-based mountaineering brand, often referred to as "the Arc’teryx of South Korea" (you can find out more about Black Yak on the Altitude Blog).
Winner of ISPO's Outdoor Base Layer award in 2019, Black Yak's Mountain Shemagh Balaclava may be overkill for some, but for Scottish winter climbing or high altitude mountaineering Black Yak's mountain balaclava may be just the thing.
Scramble are currently testing this beside Rab's lighter Ninja Balaclava (which may be more appropriate for their uses). Any useful findings will appear here as well as on Scramble.
Head, chest and face protection, tested and verified for high mountain applications
The Black Yak Mountain Balaclava is made from two primary fabrics: 1) CORDURA fleece (blue), and 2) GORE-TEX INFINIUM WINDSTOPPER (black). Due to its split (flip-top) design, the Shemagh can be worn "hood-down" as a neck gaiter, then with only the face mask up, and finally, hood-up for full balaclava mode.
Unlike some manufacturer's who often skimp on the fabric below the neck, Black Yak have made sure their Mountain Shemagh covers the shoulders and upper chest allowing for plenty of fabric to tuck under a base or mid-layer, thus avoiding cold-spots. There are perforations at the ear and the mouth to ensure hearing is not impaired and goggles don't fog.
An outstanding, well thought-through item and certainly worthy of its award. Possibly over-kill for some, but for those pushing their limits in extreme conditions the Black Yak Mountain Balaclava has to be a serious option.
