For their weight, these Evazote foam mats are surprisingly durable and can be folded or rolled; doubled over they make excellent sit / changing mats. They can be rolled around items to form a pillow, added to short mat systems for extra insulation and comfort or used as back padding in lightweight packs. Scramble's main use for these is to provide grip between slippery sleeping mats and bivvies, preventing sliding on sloping ground whilst adding an R-Value of 0.45 to their modular sleeping mat setup.
The insulation gain is marginal but not negligible, the same goes for protection from thorny undergrowth, but these mats have such a wide range of applications (comfort, gear protection, anti-slip inserts you name it) that it's easy to see why Evazote closed cell foam mats are a staple of the ultralight community.
Scramble chose this lightweight foam for their upcoming Machine Padded Belts and have made these mats available on SYSTEM at a competitive price.
Finally, it's worth stating that R-Values (measure of insulation) are additive, so a doubled over layer will provide an R-Value of 0.9, doubled over again will be 1.8 etc ...
* specifications for Evazote and other CCF, have a thermal conductivity of about 0.04 W/mK which translates to around 0.15R per 1mm of foam.
