More info

Scramble's ultralight windshield, designed for the best camping stove around - the Kovea Spider

The Kovea Spider is Scramble's top rated stove in the "4 Season Gas Stove" category, in fact it's the only stove they recommend and you can see their detailed review here. So impressed were they, they designed an ultralight windshield to accompany it - enter the Scramble Spider Windshield. Unlike gas-top canister stoves, remote gas canister stoves allow the windshield to provide full wrap-around wind protection, as this doesn't affect the temperature of the canister. This means that remote canister stoves, especially ones as efficient as the Kovea Spider when accompanied by a fully protective windshield are far more efficient than canister-top stoves. Scramble show in their review, that the Kovea Spider will weigh less (all in) than an ultralight 45g canister top stove on trips of 1 week or more simply due to gas burning efficiency.

Note:  The new version of the Spider Windshield is exactly the same design but has a slightly mottled finish (a sanding / de-burring artifact).

Features

  • The Spider Windshield has been designed to fit inside a number of the most popular solo trekking pots: The MSR Titan Kettle, Alpkit's old and new version of the Myti900 pot (see pic below), the Keith Titanium 900ml Single Walled Pot (Ti3209) and Tiartisans Titanium 900ml (Ta8316).
  • Made from 0.1mm thick TC4 Titanium Sheet the Windshield weighs just 25g.
  • Titanium sheet is flexible and very robust and provides stable wind protection even in extreme high winds and sub zero temperatures.
  • The windshield has a back-plate which swivels round and slots into place via 2 tabs. The plate can be further secured via the back-plate clip. High winds in sub zero temperatures will cool the cooking pot via convection as it's trying to boil. The purpose of the back-plate is to block the wind and allow convection to cool the windshield instead of the pot. When cooking in such conditions make sure the back-plate is facing the oncoming wind.
  • The Spider Windshield also comes with a "front-door" which further prevents any heat loss. The window allows the user to light the stove when the door is fitted, and also keep an eye on the flame. The door is not always necessary, but is useful in poor conditions. The door is easily opened and closed via a tab and hook fitting on the right side (see below).
  • The Spider Windshield has been designed to withstand the rigours of outdoor life, and Scramble have attempted to remove any potential points of failure (earlier designs has a press-fit button, but these are prone to fail over time).
  • As this is a very niche product (working only with the Kovea Spider) initial runs of this item are hand-made / machined from a template design (please see the note at the end of this page).
  • The windshield comes with 2 additional spare clips.
  • Max pot base diameter allowed by the Spider Windshield is approximately 13.5cm (i.e. a fraction less than the 14cm max pot support diameter of the Spider Stove).

Instructions

Please note the pictures below are of an earlier model. However, the overall design / instructions have not changed.

  • After removing the Spider Windshield from its pot or pack, first un-clip the door section (this is fitted last).
  • Rotate the back-plate and push (bend) the tabs so they sit on the inside of the windshield (facing the stove).
  • One of the tabs can be additionally secured in place by rotating the clip to the horizontal position (see pic below).
  • Once the back-plate is in its vertical position, windshield hole A slots on the inside of the Spider leg marked L1 (note L1 and L3 are the legs either side of the gas pipe - this is where the "door" section goes), the back of the windshield goes on the outside of L2 and then windshield hole B slots through L3.

Scramble Spider Ultralight Titanium Windshield Instructions Part 1

  • The door has only one hole (C) and this slots inside L1 (like hole A).
  • The door is opened and closed by holding the tab and bending the hook section inside the main section, so the hook fits over L3 (as pictured below).
  • This all sounds like a fuss, but in reality is takes under a minute to set up.

Scramble Spider Ultralight Titanium Windshield Instructions Part 2

  • To pack up simply reverse the process (when the stove etc has cooled down!).
  • The door section is best slotted into the inside section and secured with the clip (in vertical position).

Scramble Spider Ultralight Titanium Windshield Instructions Part 3

  • Finally, loosely roll up the windshield and slot it inside your pot and it will spring out and hug the inside of your pot leaving room for all the other stuff, like a the Kovea Spider and a gas canister etc.

Scramble Spider Ultralight Titanium Windshield Instructions Part 4

Note

The Scramble Spider Windshield is made from TC4 Titanium Sheet and is 0.1mm thick. Titanium is an extremely strong metal and when as thin as 0.1mm, has a fine edge. Great care has been taken by Scramble to round and smooth edges to reduce the possibility of accidents. However, trekking and associated outdoor activities can be dangerous and participants in such activities will often operate equipment when tired and accidents (sometimes serious) can happen in remote locations. Please make sure to read the accompanying note which ships with this product.
