A Highly Functional 3 Season Trekking Cap That Packs Down Small

Caps are useful. Whether you're walking head down and headlong into driving rain or hail or require a little shelter and shade from the raging sun, that little item capable of rescuing poorly designed hoods is a practical necessity.

Designed for runners, the Ronhill Split Cap is an excellent lightweight and durable cap ideally suited for mountain trekkers. The balance between breathability and wind resistance is just about right; it dries out quickly and is easy to stow away. A very handy piece of kit at a reasonable price. The Ronhill Split Cap is Scramble's top pick in the 3 Season Trekking Cap category.

The Afterlight Edition (£20 RRP)

Ronhill released a range of clothing specifically for low-light activities called the "Afterlight Range". One item in this range is the Afterlight Split Cap, which is a Trail Split Cap with a woven matrix of high-viz reflective trim. We've slightly boosted the image brightness so this shows in the product image. In reality, in normal light the cap has a nice carbon black look to it, when hit with a headlight the cap lights up and make the wearer visible. Useful for night runners but also an important safety measure for trekkers that have to navigate road sections at night or who want to be seen by their group when traversing dangerous terrain via head-torch.

Aside from retailing at £3 more that the standard version (RRP), the main difference is the Afterlight Edition comes in two overlapping sizes (see sizing below).

Features

  • Wind resistant
  • Breathable
  • Split peak for minimal pack size and easy storage
  • Good velcro adjustable strap
  • Lightweight (under 50g - add 3g for the M/L Afterlight Version)
  • Activelite fabric

Sizing

The standard Ronhill Split Cap will adjust to fit most adult head sizes (54 - 59 cm circumference).

Afterlight Edition:  S/M = 54 - 57 cm,  M/L = 56 - 59 cm

(Note: Scramble's Editor has a 57.5cm head circumference and reports that he can fit into both sizes, though the S/M is right on the limit for a good fit, the M/L version is a better fit and due to the velcro adjuster allows the cap to be worn over a balaclava or softshell hood. In most cases the S/M will be ideal for most women and the M/L will fit most men)

To measure your head size, using a tape measure, start one inch above your eye brows and go around the widest part of your head. Best to do it a few times and get a friend to help.
