The Blue Ice Warthog 40L Pack: Hardcore Minimalism in Action

The Warthog 40 is Scramble's top rated pack for those inclined to more adventurous scrambling, climbing and mountaineering (especially in sub zero conditions where kit is often bulky). The Warthog packs aren't modular but since Scramble developed their Tower 11L Pack Extender, packs like the Warthog 40 are now more easily extensible and thus flexible in terms of their capacity.

The Warthog 40 has a rock solid base made from 1680D ballistic nylon; a body made from 420D Cordura; a comfortable, conforming stiff boarded back panel and high quality straps and fixtures; "an ultra-durable, yet impressively light 40L beast of a pack at an affordable price".

The Warthog 40 is Scramble's pack of choice "for those who often operate in sub zero temperatures, whose mountain treks regularly morph into something more akin to mountaineering".

For a close up look at the Warthog 40 see Scramble's review.

Blue Ice's Description:

The Warthog 40L is tough and light like its little brother, the Warthog 28L, but with added volume and features that make it more suitable for longer adventures. Like its smaller sibling, it features a helmet holder, rope carrier and a handy quick-release skirt opening system for easy access to your gear. The lateral compression straps can be used to transport skis and the ice tool holders are perfectly designed for carrying a set of technical tools. The thermo-formed ergonomic back panel and shoulder stabilizer straps are designed to provide maximum comfort when carrying heavier loads, and the front haul loop is very handy for hanging the pack at belays. The Warthog 40L is incredibly durable and its compact design ensures maximum freedom of movement when you’re climbing. It is the perfect companion for all of your most demanding alpine adventures.

A Brief but Useful Overview

Typical Reviews (Translated):

  • Brilliant 40L Sack - My third Blue Ice pack and absolutely love it - minimalist and comfortable. Quality material and construction, slim built and alpinesque; a joy to wear and use. Love the helmet carriage system, the simplicity (no excess required) and the feel of quality. Highly recommend this model and Blue Ice as a brand.

  • Very basic, very comfortable too - Very basic, very comfortable to walk with normal climbing weight despite very minimalistic hip belt, fabric seems bombproof only time will tell. The whole closure system is excellent, must have made improvements to helmet holder as it fastens very easily even with winter gloves on. Climbs fantastic!
